Kevin Durant’s 2024-25 season with the Phoenix Suns has come to a close after they finished 11th in the West, which now intensifies the talk of his departure.
There were a lot of teams hoping to sign the two-time MVP, however, the Houston Rockets are emerging as the top destination for KD, as they finished second in his conference with a 52-30 record.
Amidst the young core boasted by the Rockets, rumors dictate they are still looking for a veteran star to guide them, where Durant becomes the next best possible option.
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that KD and the Houston franchise have a “mutual interest.” Furthermore, he pointed out the outcome of the 2025 playoffs as the deciding factor whether or not they’ll still chase Durant.
“There is going to be a level of mutual interest, there has been already, with them and Kevin Durant with the [Phoenix] Suns, seeing how they do,” Charania said.
He added, “If you lose early [in the playoffs], if you don’t win enough to where you want to, could you look at a guy like Kevin Durant this offseason?”

Durant is in his third year out of a four-year $194.2 million deal with the Suns, and the only way Houston could bring him in his through a trade.
On Monday, Charania reported that the Suns are working on a trade for Durant as they failed to trade him during the middle of the season. While there are many suitors for Durant’s signature, the Suns are looking for the best deal possible as they want to move on from KD’s stint with them.
Not involving Kevin Durant in trade talks becomes Phoenix Suns’ biggest regret
Even before the trade deadline, the Phoenix Suns have been looking for ways to offload Kevin Durant for the Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler. The deal would’ve included a return for KD to the Golden State Warriors, however, the two-time MVP didn’t want a reunion with the Warriors, and he also felt blindsided by the Suns.

Per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Suns privately “admitted they made a mistake” by involving Durant in the decision to trade him. Now, they are eager to find a different way to give Durant a better team this summer.
