The massive success of EA’s College Football 25 has caused EA and 2K to be interested in bringing back their college basketball video game series.
The last video game entry for the EA franchise was NCAA Basketball 2010. For 2K, the last entry was College Hoops 2K8. The two franchises have been quiet for more than a decade, until the recent success of College Football 25.
Will Another College Basketball Game Work?
The college basketball video game was more of a cult classic than anything else. The sales were solid, but it never reached the same level as college football. When the football video game series stopped, people were very upset. In the near 15 years without a basketball video game, not many people complained. Although this year’s College Football 25 was an instant hit, it does not mean the same will occur with a new college basketball game.
Both EA and 2K reported poor sales in the basketball series, which ultimately led to its demise. The two companies rivaled each other for the college basketball game crown. Obviously, the series’s were overshadowed by the NBA 2k and NBA Live games. Although there was a cult-like following for the college basketball game, the sales didn’t show for it.
Why The Return Would Take Too Long
The NCAA’s NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) rules would interfere with the production of a new game. With a new college basketball video game, a major payday would be expected amongst players. There are 364 Division I teams to add to the game, which would be more than the college football game. This would be a rigorous process for EA and 2K, and after poor sales previously, it might not be the greatest idea to move forward with more college basketball video game franchises.
Although it will be difficult to bring back the college basketball series, the discussions about it coming back is a positive sign. Many die hard fans of the franchises are excited to hear the news, especially after College Football 25. The smash hit game became the highest selling video game of all time in the U.S. After those kind of numbers, EA and 2K can’t help but to be intrigued by the revival of the college basketball series.
