The NCAA wants to make sure that every possible competition their host is built on the value of competitive fairness. While scouting and the transfer portal may have an impact on how a team can build their teams, every program involved in an NCAA competition is supposed to be judged on fairness.
The league believes that there’s one thing that’s affecting the inegrity of the games, and they’re starting to take proactive steps that will help them combat the effects of this factor.
The NCAA is looking to ban sports betting and prop bets to protect college athletes
Reports suggest that NCAA president Charlie Baker started the move after betting has affected games on the professional level, specifically on Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter.
According to The Spun’s Matt Hladik, they are specifically targeting Ohio, Maryland, and Vermont in their anti-sports betting efforts:
“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with pro bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competition and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed,” Baker wrote in a statement. “The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop bets.”
This announcement is huge as the organization previously didn’t feel the need to directly address any sort of problem related to prop bets. The fact that the issue is handled in such a straightfowrard manner after a sports-betting scandal broke out is evidence that the NCAA is taking the dilemma seriously.
How can prop bets affect the NCAA?
Gamblers who engage in sports betting love prop bets because it asks them if a certain player or team will be able to meet a specific requirement.
If athletes participate in such bets, it can skew the integrity of the game being played. Since an athlete who made a bet on his team can win lots if they make a certain bet, they can commit various things to help them secure the win on the betting market.
These things can affect the fairness of the game being played and impact the overall quality of the product the they are offering. One can count on the organization to continue to hound against sports betting until the end of time.
