New York Knicks guard Donte DiVincenzo caught fire on Monday night in what turned out to be a career performance for the 6-foot-4 shooting guard. DiVincenzo dropped 40 points all over the Detroit Pistons on 11-of-20 shooting from beyond the arc as he led the Knicks to a 124-99 blowout win at Madison Square Garden.
Pistons head coach Monty Williams, however, was quick to trump DiVincenzo’s celebration with an eyebrow-raising accusation on the Knicks sharpshooter.
Monty Williams Fires Shot at Donte DiVincenzo, New York Knicks
Williams was in an understandably not-so-jovial mood after another blowout loss for the Pistons. After all, Detroit became the first team to amass 60 losses this season after Monday’s disappointing performance.
Williams appeared to have accused DiVincenzo and the Knicks of stat padding as he called them out for their antics on Monday night:
“I don’t care about their team. I couldn’t care less,” Williams said (h/t Legion Hoops on Twitter). “Those guys, the way they got those threes. I don’t want to be a part of that story.”
Josh Hart Claps Back at Monty Williams
Knicks forward Josh Hart caught wind of Williams’ post-game comments, and naturally, the outspoken veteran just had to respond. Hart dropped a savage clap back at Williams and his Pistons:
“If he didn’t wanna be part of the story, he should’ve told his guys to defend better,” Hart said.
That’s brutal. At the same time, though, it’s also absolutely true. If Williams and the Suns weren’t happy with the way the Knicks were playing then perhaps they should have done something to counter it. Except that they didn’t.
