The New York Knicks were one of the busiest teams this offseason, as they traded for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns. But because they only have 12 players on standard contracts, they may have to make a few more moves to fill out their roster.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the New York Knicks are interested in bringing over four-year journeyman Matt Ryan, whose last stop was with the New Orleans Pelicans last season.
“I’m told one player they have serious interest in signing is Matt Ryan,” Charania said on NBA Today. “Free agent sharpshooter, 6-foot-7 shooter. He spent time with the Lakers, the Celtics, the Timberwolves, and most recently the Pelicans. He shot 45% from three last year for the Pelicans.”
Matt Ryan made 28 regular season appearances (one start) for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2023-24, averaging 5.4 points and 1.4 rebounds on 43.4 percent shooting from the field and 45.1 percent from beyond the arc in 13.9 minutes per contest. The 27-year-old swingman is a White Plains, New York native and is a 41.1 percent career three-point shooter.
Bringing in Matt Ryan makes sense for the New York Knicks after they waived Landry Shamet due to a dislocated shoulder.
New York Knicks suffer humiliating opening loss against the Boston Celtics
The New York Knicks’ 2024-25 NBA campaign is off to a poor start, as they lost to the defending champions, the Boston Celtics, with a score of 132-109.
Six New York players scored in double digits, including Jalen Brunson and Miles McBride, with 22 points each. However, they couldn’t stop Boston’s three-point barrage (29 three-pointers made), so much so that Josh Hart wanted them to get drug tested.
