After taking care of business against Nikola Jokic and Serbia in the opening game, Team USA went ahead and dominated South Sudan in a dominant win. For former NBA star Patrick Beverley, though, there’s a reason why he didn’t catch the United States’ most recent game at the Olympics.
The United States men’s basketball team maintained their dominance at the 2024 Olympic Games by securing a 103-86 victory over South Sudan in their Group C matchup. The win not only secured the USA’s spot in the quarterfinals but also clinched the top position in their group, eliminating Puerto Rico from the next phase of the tournament.
The key to the USA’s success was their defense, which effectively neutralized South Sudan’s star player, Carlik Jones, who had given them trouble in a pre-Olympic exhibition game. With Jones heavily defended by Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo, South Sudan struggled to generate offense, allowing the USA to pull away early and maintain a comfortable lead throughout the game.
Adebayo was a standout performer for the USA, scoring 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting, including two 3-pointers, in the first half. Kevin Durant, the USA’s all-time leading scorer at the Olympics, came off the bench to contribute 14 points, while LeBron James added 12 points, surpassing the 300-career-point mark in Olympic history.
Despite the loss, South Sudan showed fight, outscoring the USA 50-48 in the second half, with Nuni Omot leading the way with 24 points. The game highlighted the growing depth and competitiveness of international basketball, as the USA continues to face stiffer challenges in their pursuit of Olympic glory.
Former NBA Star Patrick Beverley Gets Brutally Honest About Not Watching Team USA’s Game Against South Sudan in Olympics
After the match, different personalities gave their take on how Team USA performed against South Sudan. Beverley, on the other hand, went the opposite direction in a tweet he posted on his official account.
“Glad I didn’t stream this blowout USA🇺🇸🔥🔥🏀 #Paris2024,” Beverley tweeted.
The former Milwaukee Bucks guard has been a constant presence online via his podcast revolving around all things basketball. For this reason alone, it’s rather surprising he doesn’t have an opinion about Team USA’s victory over South Sudan.
It remains to be seen whether Beverley will catch the United States’ next game or he’ll let it pass again. Whether he does so or not, the fact remains that Team USA remains the most favored to win the gold in Paris down the line.
