While Paige Bueckers is undeniably performing on the highest level individually at UConn, particularly this season, the fact that she has yet to achieve one feat in college basketball may be the huge tie breaker when ranking her in the list of the greatest in college basketball history.
In a recent interview with ESPN, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma addressed one common criticism about Bueckers. That, should they not win the national championship this year, she would graduate from the program without any championship to her name.
“There are a lot of great players that have had amazing careers that have never won a national championship, that have never been to a Final Four,” the coach said.
Meanwhile, WNBA legend Sue Bird gave her honest opinion on the topic. Per the UConn legend, a championship may indeed not define a player’s impact on her career. After all, a lot of players who were considered impactful did not have a ring to their name. However, in the conversation of the greatest, it may be a deciding factor.
“I do think it is the ultimate tiebreaker.”
Paige Bueckers has yet to win a championship with UConn despite her incredible individual performances and leadership. UConn has faced tough competition in recent years, with powerhouse teams like South Carolina and Stanford dominating the NCAA landscape. While Bueckers has led UConn to multiple Final Four appearances, the elusive championship remains a goal she continues to chase.

After the game, Bueckers addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout her collegiate career.

A clip of the post-game press conference went viral, where UConn head coach Geno Auriemma was shown emotional when Paige stood up and left the press area for one last time at their home arena.
The camera showed Auriemma following Bueckers with a somber look, as she seemingly held his tears back. The moment touched a lot of fans, as they saw it as a testament to the bond that the coach and the star player have shared throughout the years.

During this game, Paige Bueckers tied her career high with 34 points, leading the Huskies to a dominant 91-57 victory over South Dakota State and securing their spot in the Sweet 16 for the 31st consecutive year.
