Former UConn star and now Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers, even before making her debut with the Dallas Wings, is facing shots from critics like Jason Whitlock.
In a post on X, Jason Whitlock threw a vague shot at Paige Bueckers and former UConn teammate Azi Fudd, as the two shared a moment during the WNBA Draft.
“Now I understand why WNBA players are rolling out the red carpet for Paige,” Whitlcok captioned the photo of the two players.

While he did not elaborate further, X users under his post theorized that Whitlock could be taking a jab at the supposed sexuality of the two. In his previous commentaries, Whitlock had reportedly called the WNBA a “league of angry lesbians,” among other names hinting at homosexuality in the league.

Paige Bueckers Talks About Her Feelings on Being No. 1 Overall Pick
While being the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft is definitely no longer a shock to everyone and to Paige Bueckers herself, it still does not take away the feeling of actually achieving the things that have only been the talk of the town for the past season.
“You don’t ever want to assume anything in life. Nothing is guaranteed, so for this moment to be here and it to actually happen, it’s nerve-racking,” Bueckers said about being selected No. 1. “You just have a level of excitement, nervousness, bittersweet feeling knowing that my journey at UConn is over but excited for the next one to begin. To be able to share that moment with the people sitting at my table and also the people not sitting at my table, they played a huge role in it.”

Dallas Wings general manager Curt Miller also expressed his gratitude and excitement on signing Bueckers to their team, after months of waiting following their win at the draft lottery.
“What we’ve seen No. 1 picks do to franchises around the league, it is something truly special, the trajectory of your team, the momentum that it brings,” Miller said. “Paige will do it in her own way, and her efficiency, her unselfishness, her ability to take over when needed, I think you’re going to see her really impact this franchise.”

Throughout her career at UConn, Paige Bueckers averaged 19.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, with an impressive shooting percentage of 53.1% from the field, 42.3% from three-point range, and 85.0% from the free-throw line.
