Joel Embiid has signed a new three-year, $193 million max contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers to extend his stay with the franchise that selected him with the No.3 overall pick during the 2014 NBA Draft.
Upon signing the new deal, Embiid took to Instagram to express his desire to win an NBA championship and be a Sixer for life.
“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family,” Embiid wrote. “There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship, and I think we’re just getting started.”
Joel Embiid is coming off an injury-riddled 2023-24 campaign where he only played 39 regular season games since he sustained a torn meniscus right before the NBA All-Star break. Still, he put up robust averages of 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game on 53/39/88 shooting splits.
In the playoffs, Embiid averaged 33.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.5 blocks on 44/33/86 shooting splits, where the New York Knicks eliminated the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round.
Embiid also won his first-ever Olympic gold medal this summer, representing the United States in the Paris Games last month.
Joel Embiid is a member of the $500 million club after signing a new Philadelphia 76ers contract
Joel Embiid’s new deal means he’s now guaranteed $515 million of career earnings on the court, making him the fifth player in NBA history to surpass the $500 million contract club.
The 2023 NBA MVP joins LeBron James ($584 million), Stephen Curry ($536 million), Paul George ($519 million), and Kevin Durant ($505 million) on the exclusive list.
Injury history aside, Joel Embiid is one of the best players in the NBA, so locking him down to a new max contract is the right move for the Philadelphia 76ers.
