The NBA has come down with a decision on a punishment for Joel Embiid for the Philadelphia 76ers star big man’s action on a reporter following last Saturday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
According to a statement released by the league on Tuesday, Embiid will have to serve a three-game suspension without pay.
“Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA,” said Joe Dumars, NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations. “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interaction must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.”
When will Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid be eligible to play?
Following the timeline of the suspension, Embiid can make his 2024-25 NBA season debut on Nov.12 against the New York Knicks at home. Before that, the Sixers will meet with the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Charlotte Hornets. With Embiid serving a suspension, the 76ers can continue to be expected to give starting nods to veteran big man Andre Drummond.
It can be recalled that Embiid, who has yet to play this season due to left knee injury management, reportedly shoved a reporter, Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer, in the locker room after the Sixers’ 124-107 home loss to the Grizzlies over the weekend. Embiid apparently did not like a piece written by Hayes, which mentioned the former NBA Most Valuable Player’s son and deceased brother.
