Just recently, the Philadelphia 76ers made a big splash in free agency by signing All-Star wing Paul George. For sports analyst Skip Bayless, though, this move will add more pressure for former MVP Joel Embiid to finally win it all in the NBA next season.
The Sixers recently landed a major free agent signing, agreeing to a four-year, $212 million max contract with George. The 34-year-old wing is joining the Sixers’ star duo of Embiid and rising star Tyrese Maxey, who also received a $205 million contract extension.
George opted out of his $48 million player option with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he has played the past five seasons. The Sixers beat out the Clippers and Orlando Magic to secure George’s services.
Last season, George made the All-Star team while averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the Clippers, shooting 41% from 3-point range. He provides an important third scoring option alongside Embiid and Maxey.
The Sixers are hoping George’s addition can help them get past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001 and return to the NBA Finals. The team also recently added veterans Andre Drummond and Eric Gordon in free agency as they look to build a championship contender around their new big three.
Despite the high-profile signing, questions remain about George’s health and availability, as he has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. But the Sixers clearly believe he can be the missing piece to help them finally break through in the competitive Eastern Conference.
Skip Bayless Warns Joel Embiid of Pressure to Win After Philadelphia 76ers’ Free Agency Splash This Year
Without a doubt, Philadelphia is among the big winners of this year’s offseason. For Bayless, though, these big moves will only add more pressure to Embiid in the coming season, as seen in a tweet he posted on his official X account.
“Caleb Martin is a surprisingly good signing for the Sixers who have already had several (PG, EG, Drummond). So the pressure mounts on Joel Embiid,” Bayless tweeted.
Last season, Embiid only played a total of 39 games due to injuries. Even so, the All-Star center averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.7 blocks per contest.
If Philadelphia hopes to win a ring next year, it would require a healthy Embiid playing with George and Maxey. If the big man fails, he would only be proving Bayless right in his warning.
