All-Star Tyrese Maxey has played with a number of players ever since he joined the Philadelphia 76ers as a rookie in 2020. Just recently, though, the point guard expressed his true feelings when teammate De’Anthony Melton joined the Golden State Warriors a few days ago.
Maxey, a native of Dallas, Texas, was a highly touted high school basketball player, earning accolades such as McDonald’s All-American and Texas Mr. Basketball during his time at South Garland High School. After a successful freshman season at the University of Kentucky, he declared for the 2020 NBA Draft and was selected 21st overall by Philadelphia.
The young guard’s early NBA career was marked by limited playing time, but when Ben Simmons refused to play for the Sixers the following season, Maxey seized the opportunity to become the team’s starting point guard. Over the next few years, Maxey steadily improved his game, culminating in a breakout 2023-24 season where he was named an NBA All-Star and won the Most Improved Player Award.
A few days ago, the Philly guard signed a lucrative 5-year, $204 million max contract to remain with the Sixers, solidifying his future with the franchise as they continue to build around his dynamic two-way play.
Philadelphia 76ers Star Tyrese Maxey Reacts to De’Anthony Melton Joining the Golden State Warriors
Even though Philly gained Paul George, they also lost a couple of guys this offseason. Among those was De’Anthony Melton, which prompted Maxey to react on his official X account.

Over the two seasons Melton played for Philly, the guard averaged 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. He is now headed to the Bay on a one-year $12.8 million contract for the Warriors, primarily as a backup guard for the team.
As it stands, Maxey’s situation with the Sixers just got better due to the addition of George, making them instant contenders in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, Melton is headed to a Warriors team that just lost All-Star Klay Thompson and is attempting to make the most of Stephen Curry’s remaining prime in the league. And while they’ll next meet as competitors, the bond between the two will remain solid.
