At 36 years old, Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns remains among those in the higher tiers of players in the NBA. He is still a very capable offensive weapon that can singlehandedly take over a game and win by himself. Sure, there is some slippage in the quality of his play given his age and length of service in the league, but he is still better than most players out there.
All that being said, he can’t entirely control what will happen to the Suns in the 2024-25 NBA season. According to Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report, Durant could end up asking for a trade within the 2024-25 NBA season, depending on how the campaign progresses for Phoenix.
There’s no sign of unrest in Phoenix at the moment, and the Suns, led by new head coach Mike Budenholzer and a remade supporting cast that features a couple of actual point guards, could make the Finals with a few favorable breaks. But if KD’s Warriors tenure taught us anything, it’s that no amount of team success guarantees satisfaction.
Durant is one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, but he’s also among its most mercurial. His history suggests it’s not a question of if his eye will start wandering, but when.
Will Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant ask for a trade?
The Suns were a huge disappointment last season. Although they made the 2024 NBA Playoffs, they did not last long, as Phoenix got ejected from title contention right in the first round by Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. And the manner in which the Timberwolves took Phoenix down triggered plenty of questions about whether the Suns can really win a title with a Big Three consisting of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
Durant has two more seasons left on his current contract, including the 2024-25 campaign where he will be paid $51.18 million before pocketing $54.79 million in 2025-26 (when he will be 37).
It may be too early to tell, but there could be signs along the way about Durant’s stance on staying with the Suns.
