The Phoenix Suns have numerous problems to address as they prepare for another jab at the NBA championship next season. The fact the Minnesota Timberwolves swept them despite their stacked trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal shows that the roster is still far from contention status.
The Suns understand the dilemma they’re facing and have tried addressing the various issues that affect their performance. They made a radical coaching change by bringing over Mike Budenholzer as head coach and former San Antonio Spurs player Brent Barry as one of his assistants.
However, it took the team a long time before they could find a reliable point guard to take over the squad. While Booker did a respectable job as the primary ballhandler, it became clear in the postseason that he would better be off as a scorer.
The Suns may have finally found their PG for the coming season as they snagged a great point guard from a franchise struggling to get things off the ground.
Tyus Jones joins the Phoenix Suns from the Washington Wizards as their starting PG
The Suns took their time in identifying the right point guard that would be the perfect fit for what Budenholzer wanted to do with the Suns offense. They eventually found their man in former Washington Wizards point guard Tyus Jones.
Arthur Hill of Hoops Rumors wrote about the specifics of Jones’ contract and what it entails to one key player for the roster last season:
Jones will earn $3MM on a one-year, minimum-salary contract, opting to take less money for the chance to play for a contender. In a statement to ESPN on Saturday, he indicated that he expects to start in Phoenix.
In the same story, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports hears that Grayson Allen will likely be moved to a bench role to open up a starting spot for Jones. Allen was the NBA’s top three-point shooter last season, connecting at 46.1% on 5.9 attempts per game.
The 27-year-old Duke product had a productive year during his lone season with the Wizards, averaging 12.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists a game while keeping his turnovers at an impressive 1.0 average.
It would be regrettable for Allen to be relegated back to the bench after averaging 13.5 PPG for the Suns on an impressive 46.1% clip from deep. However, it’s clear that the team badly needs a floor general who can make plays. Moreover, he can impact opposing benches by overwhelming them with his scoring.
Should everything work out with the Tyus Jones signing, the Suns will become one of the most dangerous opponents any team could face in the Western Conference come playoffs.
