Purdue Boilermakers’ Zach Edey Gets Enormous Compliment From Boston Celtics’ Kristaps Porzingis

There aren’t a lot of people out there who could relate to Purdue Boilermakers big man Zach Edey about being a huge human being and a great basketball player at the same time. Boston Celtics unicorn Kristaps Porzingis is among those who know what it’s like for the Boilermakers star.

Via Jared Weiss of The Athletic:

“7’3 Kristaps Porziņģis on Zach Edey, responding to a question from @Hunter_Bailey45 : “Big dude. I’m a big human being, but he’s a little bit next level.”

Indeed, Edey is a giant. Even bigger than Porzingis. The Boilermakers center stands 7-4 and weighs nearly 300 pounds. But to say that his success in college is just because of his size would be disingenuous. Edey has serious skills which have allowed him to average 25.0 points and 12.2 rebounds while shooting 62.4 percent from the field this season, so far.

Purdue center Zach Edey celebrates a play against Tennessee during the second half of the NCAA tournament Midwest Regional Elite 8 round at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Sunday, March 31, 2024. Edey’s 40 points helped the Boilermakers to a 72-66 win and their first Final Four since 1980.

Edey has simply been amazing in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. In the Purdue Boilermakers’ most recent game, he exploded for 40 points and 16 rebounds as the Tennessee Volunteers nearly looked helpless in the Elite Eight round.

Up next for Edey and the Boilermakers is an intriguing tussle versus a Cinderella in the form of No. 11 NC State Wolfpack in the Final Four. Like Purdue, the Wolfpack are also being powered by a physically imposing big man in 6-9 DJ Burns Jr.

So far in the Big Dance, Edey is averaging 30.0 points on 65.6 FG%, 16.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks.
