The San Antonio Spurs won’t be contending for NBA titles any time soon, but they have a solid foundation to build on with Victor Wembanyama.
The French center put up an incredible rookie campaign that promises great things for the fanbase. While the team had a draft that garnered mixed reactions from fans and analysts, everyone still knows that Wemby is going to be an important player in the league for years to come.
One of the moves that would make his life in the league easier is the arrival of Chris Paul. Everyone was confused at first as to why a future Hall of Famer who wants to win a ring would go to the Spurs.
Some say that the Spurs culture was what attracted Paul into signing with the team, but one famous sports media personality thinks there’s something more to the issue than what people are letting on.
Skip Bayless believes Chris Paul would become a player-coach for the San Antonio Spurs
Skip Bayless believed that Paul wouldn’t just move to the San Antonio Spurs just to play with a generational player like Wemby. He thinks that the 39-year-old veteran is preparing for a career outside of basketball by handling things as a player-coach.
Per Robert Marvi of The Cold Wire:
Sports journalist and personality Skip Bayless said that while Paul is a shell of his former self as a player, he will be very valuable to the Spurs as a de facto coach on the floor.
In fact, Bayless said that this coming season, Paul will be more valuable than Hall of Fame Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
It’s not hard to see why Bayless thinks CP3 is already thinking about the future. Paul was a shell of his former self last season with the Golden State Warriors, averaging 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists a game.
Not only will Paul be a better point guard for the Spurs, but he will also help the young team perform better during in-game situations. Moreover, if he does decide to move on into coaching, he will have a good idea of what a great mentor would be by shadowing Gregg Popovich all around the training facility.
However, we shouldn’t put it beyond him to still chase for a championship. If he decides that he’s learned enough with the San Antonio Spurs, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him ask for a trade to a contender before the trade deadline.
