This year’s free agency has been pretty wild, with teams making headlines with their acquisitions. While Paul George’s move to the Philadelphia 76ers took the headlines, the San Antonio Spurs picking up Chris Paul is also exciting to talk about.
Pairing up one of the best point guards ever to step foot on an NBA court with the most exciting basketball prospect since LeBron James and Zion Williamson poses an intriguing proposition for fans. The thought of Wemby finally having a capable point guard who can find his 7’4″ frame whenever he gets open will make Gregg Popovich’s team exciting again.

However, long-time fans of the future Hall of Famer would know that CP3 choosing the Spurs instead of another contender is a puzzling decision. A championship ring is the only thing lacking in the 39-year-old’s illustrious career, and choosing the Spurs seemed like a backward step for his championship hopes.
It’s clear that something else was in play when Paul decided to move to Texas, and one analyst explains why the veteran floor general made the move.
Chris Haynes: Chris Paul’s fascination with Gregg Popovich’s culture sold him on playing for the San Antonio Spurs in 2024-25

Chris Haynes had his ear on the issue, and he believes that the primary reasons behind his decision to play for the San Antonio Spurs had everything to do with the situation they now find themselves in.
He explained, as reported by The Cold Wire’s Ernesto Cova, that the main allure for Paul is the prospect of playing with Wembanyama and experiencing the famed Spurs culture firsthand.
The Spurs have built a reputation as a team that stays true to what they are and not allow trends to trample their core identity. This culture, started by Popovich when he took over as head coach, is one that was emulated by teams across the league.
There’s no question that Paul is not planning to win a championship with this roster, but the team will benefit a lot by having a legendary PG show them how to effectively operate plays practice with them day in and day out.

However, it would be a pleasant surprise if the Spurs somehow manage to make the postseason with Paul as a major asset.
