San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell won’t be available at the start of the 2024-25 NBA campaign after having surgery to fix the third metatarsal head in his right foot following a stress reaction.
Devin Vassell was solid for the San Antonio Spurs last season, averaging 19.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.1 steals on 47.2 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from three-point land. He played 68 games (62 starts) and missed the final eight games of the 2023-24 campaign due to his current injury.
The former Florida State standout emerged as the team’s second option behind Victor Wembanyama, as he has shown growth as a ball handler and perimeter scorer. With Vassell sidelined, the San Antonio Spurs will rely on Keldon Johnson and Malaki Branham to step up next season.
Stephon Castle, the fourth overall pick of this summer’s NBA Draft, is also expected to have more playing time right away, while veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes will also help shoulder the offensive load.
San Antonio Spurs 2024-25 outlook
The San Antonio Spurs aim to make it back to the postseason, but it’ll be much easier said than done because they’re in the ultra-tough Western Conference. However, given their offseason moves, San Antonio should do better than their 22-60 record in 2023-24.
Their success will largely depend on Victor Wembanyama’s development, as he has the potential to be one of the best players in the NBA with his unique physical profile and skills. It’s rare to find seven-footers like him who could protect the rim, handle the ball well, and shoot from outside.
Wembanyama just won the NBA Rookie of the Year and was third in the Defensive Player of the Year voting after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks on 46.5 percent shooting in 71 regular season games.
