While Victor Wembanyama is in Paris helping Le Bleus in their pursuit of winning gold at the 2024 Olympics, the San Antonio Spurs made an attention-grabbing move on Wednesday when it was reported that the Western Conference franchise has finalized a deal with guard Malachi Flynn.
Via Shams Charania of The Athletic:
Free agent guard Malachi Flynn has agreed on a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Flynn – who had a career high 50 points in April – averaged eight points in 14 minutes per game for Pistons last season.
Flynn isn’t a big name but many NBA fans remember him for being one of the unlikeliest 50-point scorers in league history. During an April game against the Atlanta Hawks on the road back in the 2023-24 NBA season,
Flynn came off the bench and fired 50 points on 18/25 shooting from the field and 5/9 from behind the arc. Unfortunately for Flynn, his incredible effort was wasted in a 121-113 loss to the Hawks.
Nevertheless, he became just the third player in NBA history to score at least 50 points after coming off the bench.
Flynn was sent by the New York Knicks to the Pistons just before the 2024 NBA trade deadline. He declined a $5.81 million qualifying offer from the Pistons last June before his eventual agreement to a deal with the Spurs.
A first-round pick by the Toronto Raptors in 2020, Flynn has career averages of 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists through 213 games.
