The San Antonio Spurs are still in a rebuild mode, though, it is clear who their cornerstone is in the form of Victor Wembanyama, who is currently competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics for Le Bleus. While Wembanyama is away, the Spurs made a minor but intriguing move on Thursday, as they guaranteed Julian Champagnie’s salary for the 2024-25 campaign.
Via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype:
The San Antonio Spurs will fully guarantee Julian Champagnie’s $3 million salary for the 2024-25 season, league sources told @hoopshype. Champagnie started 59 of 74 games played for the Spurs last season and shot 36.5 percent from 3-point range.
Champagnie was part of the Spurs’ regular rotation in Wembanyama’s rookie season in the league. In the 2023-24 campaign, the former St. John’s Red Storm star averaged 6.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while connecting on 36.5 percent of his 3-point attempts across 74 games, including 59 starts.
Champagnie signed a four-year deal with the Spurs worth $12 million in 2023, but beyond the coming season, nothing is guaranteed in full in his contract. The Spurs also have a team option on Champagnie in the 2026-27 campaign.
The Spurs have a long way to go before they can be considered a legitimate threat to the rest of the league, but having Wembanyama is a big plus for them. Last season, the Spurs went just 22-60. They have not been to the playoffs since 2019 and have not won more than 34 games in a season since.
