The San Antonio Spurs have landed veteran guard Chris Paul after he was waived by the Golden State Warriors. In turn, former NBA champion Dwight Howard dropped a Victor Wembanyama prediction now that the French big man will play with the Point God next season.
Just recently, Paul has agreed to a one-year, $11 million contract with the Spurs after being released by Golden State. The Warriors had sought to trade Paul ahead of a Sunday deadline, but ultimately released the 39-year-old after failing to find a trade partner.
Paul spent the 2023-24 season in Golden State, splitting time as a backcourt mate and backup to All-Star guard Stephen Curry. While his scoring abilities have diminished from his All-Star prime, the point guard remains a capable playmaker and floor general who can still contribute in spurts. In 58 games for the Warriors, he averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 turnovers, and 1.2 steals per game, shooting 44.1% from the field and 37.1% from 3-point range.
The Spurs, who are built around Wembanyama, have added Paul to their backcourt, which also features four-year veteran Tre Jones. The team also drafted two-way UConn shooting guard Stephon Castle with the fourth pick in the NBA Draft last week. Paul’s addition to the Spurs’ young core could provide valuable veteran leadership and experience as they look to compete in the Western Conference.
Dwight Howard Drops Victor Wembanyama Prediction After San Antonio Spurs Sign Chris Paul
San Antonio landing Paul has gotten a lot of raves around the NBA. Among those who gave their take on the issue is former NBA champion Dwight Howard in a tweet he shared on his X account.
“I like cp3 with the spurs 🔥Wemby gone win the scoring title 😮💨” Howard tweeted.
Last season, Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks per game. Despite not having a talented playmaker and floor general around him, the French big man was still able to post those numbers throughout the span of 71 games. With the Point God around, last year’s top pick will have a trusted guard to set Wemby up and put him in a position to succeed in the NBA.
Paul’s addition to the Spurs lineup will potentially unlock Wembanyama on the court. If the pairing works, there’s no reason Howard’s prediction won’t come true next season and the two stars can elevate San Antonio back to the playoff picture.
