The San Antonio Spurs are still in the process of building what they hope is a championship contender. They already have a big asset to help them reclaim their glory days in the NBA with Victor Wembanyama in the fold, but he can’t do it alone. Another thing that’s clear for San Antonio is that it needs an upgrade at the guard position, something that Portland Trail Blazers court general Malcolm Brogdon could help address.
Malcolm Brogdon could be a San Antonio Spurs trade target
In a recent Bleacher Report piece, Grant Hughes produced an idea about Brogdon landing in San Antonio together with Robert Williams III and a second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft in exchange for Keldon Johnson and Zach Collins.
Brogdon would be a massive upgrade over anyone who started at the point for San Antonio last year. A 39.0 percent three-point shooter for his career, the 31-year-old veteran made 41.2 percent of his treys this past season. The 2022-23 Sixth Man of the Year also put up 15.7 points, 5.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 28.7 minutes per game.
Though he’s more of a combo guard than a true facilitator, Brogdon could play alongside Tre Jones or whomever San Antonio adds in free agency to run the point while also serving as a backup 1 when necessary.
It has been rumored that outside of Wembanyama, only Devin Vassell is the other untouchable Spurs asset. Keldon Johnson, whose role has been diminished by Wemby’s arrival in San Antonio, could carve out a more meaningful role in Portland.
A former Rookie of the Year winner, Brogdon can give the Spurs excellent stability in the backcourt. Williams, on the other hand, has question marks about his health, but he’s a solid defensive big man who’s cheaper than Collins – who will be back with the team that drafted him in 2017 under this trade scenario.
