To say that the San Antonio Spurs got their franchise star in Victor Wembanyama is an understatement because he surpassed everyone’s lofty expectations this past season.
The 21-year-old center, who plays for France in the ongoing Paris Olympics, won the NBA Rookie of the Year award and was a Top 3 finalist for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. He finished second in the DPOY voting, although he made the NBA All-Defensive First Team.
There are a handful of people who believe Victor Wembanyama should’ve won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, and one of them is Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell, who shared this sentiment during his latest interview with the Run Your Race Podcast.
“He should’ve been Rookie of the Year, (Defensive Player of the Year), Most Improved, All-NBA, MVP. Like, for real, he gon’ do some s**t,” Russell said via ClutchPoints on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Although Russell’s statement was too much, there’s no reason to think that Victor Wembanyama won’t win any of the other NBA awards in his career soon because of his unlimited potential.
San Antonio Spurs’ moves so far this offseason
If the San Antonio Spurs want to win more games next season, surrounding Victor Wembanyama with talent is a must.
The San Antonio Spurs added Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes via free agency while re-signing Charles Bassey and Sandro Mamukelashvili to one-year deals this summer.
They also stocked up during the 2024 NBA Draft, taking Stephon Castle in the first round, and Juan Nunez and Harrison Ingram in the second round.
