Former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen touched once again on his feelings towards the documentary series “The Last Dance” and unlike his initial thoughts about it, he seemed to have looked at it from a different perspective now.
In an interview with Front Office Sports, the seven-time NBA All-Star opened up his feelings once more about the documentary that celebrated Michael Jordan, and this time he had lighter emotions for it.
“I thought it was very positive,” Pippen said. “I felt like at that time that we needed something positive, something good, to watch on TV. I felt that the documentary was great.
He also expressed regret that he did not contribute much in the overall production of it.
“I didn’t have anything to do with it, which I was a little disappointed in. But I felt like it was a great documentary.”
“The Last Dance” is a sports documentary series that aired on ESPN in 2020. The documentary highlighted Michael Jordan’s career, with the story leading up to his final season with the Chicago Bulls, which was the 1997-1998 season. The series also featured interviews with Jordan’s teammates such as Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Steve Kerr.
Scottie Pippen on “Last Dance” in 2021: “I Was Nothing More Than a Prop”
When “The Last Dance” was first released, Scottie Pippen had a lot to say about the way it was presented, which even led to Michael Jordan himself reaching out to him to talk about his feelings and his opinions about it.
As he stated in his book “Unguarded,” he felt like a “prop” with the way he was presented in the show.
“Even in the second episode, which focused for a while on my difficult upbringing and unlikely path to the NBA, the narrative returned to MJ and his determination to win,” he said. “I was nothing more than a prop. His ‘best teammate of all time,’ he called me. He couldn’t have been more condescending if he tried.”
“Each episode was the same: Michael on a pedestal, his teammates secondary, smaller, the message no different from when he referred to us back then as his ‘supporting cast.’”
“Now here I was, in my mid fifties, seventeen years since my final game, watching us being demeaned once again. Living through it the first time was insulting enough.”
Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan played together for the Chicago Bulls from 1987 to 1998, winning six NBA championships and getting recognized as one of the greatest duos in basketball history.
