Steph Curry made a successful Olympic debut, winning his first gold medal in the 2024 Paris Summer Games. He led his teammates in points, averaging 14.8 per game.
His historic achievement in the recent Olympics puts him in the conversation about the top five players in the league today.
A former NBA player weighed in on “Chef Curry’s” career thus far now that he has an Olympic gold medal and four NBA titles. Jeff Teague believes that Curry still needs to win a fifth NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors to be put on par with the late great Kobe Bryant, who won five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.
“He’s the best point guard ever… He’s gonna be in that mix,” Teague said. “I just don’t see too many people better than him… If he gets another ring, definitely up there with Kobe.”
Teague played in the NBA from 2009 to 2021, spending most of his career suiting up for the Atlanta Hawks. He also had stints with the Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, and the Milwaukee Bucks. He currently works as a basketball coach in Pike High School.
Curry went red hot in Team USA’s semifinal match against Serbia, scoring 36 points to whittle down their opponent’s 17-point advantage and ultimately defeat them. It was almost no different when they fought France for the gold, as he scored all of his 24 points from beyond the arc, allowing the Americans to bring home their fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
As far as a fifth NBA title is concerned, however, it will depend on how the Warriors fare in the upcoming season, especially with Klay Thompson gone from the team. Curry must take matters into his own hands to secure another championship title.
Steph Curry wants to remain with Golden State
The Golden State Warriors shifted their focus to Steph Curry’s future with the franchise after losing Klay Thompson to free agency. The four-time NBA champion and new Olympic gold medalist maintained his desire to end his career with the team.
While preparing for the Olympics in Las Vegas a month ago, Curry shared his thoughts on his future.
“I mean, I can clearly say I want to be a Warrior for life,” Curry said. “It’s always been my goal, and I’m saying that sitting in this chair right now, but like you said, life, and especially life in the NBA, it is a wild environment, and things change quickly.”
The Warriors office seems to put a lot of trust in Curry. GM Mike Dunleavy even said one time that Curry “can get whatever he wants” when talks about his contract came up. It will be interesting to see how the team will rebuild around him.
