Every athlete dreams of winning gold at the Summer Games. Some, like Team USA star Anthony Edwards, like to dream bigger with hopes of stealing the spotlight on the grandest stage of them all.
Edwards had his best outing in the Paris 2024 Olympics yet, scoring a team-high 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting in Team USA’s win over Puerto Rico on Saturday. Ant-Man had a supersized highlight in store during the fourth quarter, as he slammed down a jaw-dropping windmill jam after a crafty steal in transition to further add insult to Purto Rico’s hopes at a comeback.
However, that highlight dunk wasn’t enough for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ first-overall pick and franchise cornerstone. After the game, Edwards admitted that he had always wanted to posterize someone at the Olympics.
“I’ve been waiting. Yeah, I’ve been waiting. I’ve been waiting,” Edwards said when he was told that he looked to be champing at a bit for a great dunk. “I wanted to dunk on somebody, but I got a man here, so I’m glad I got that one.”
With Team USA advancing to the quarterfinal stage of the men’s basketball tournament, Edwards will have more opportunities to humble an opposing defender with another one of his patented monster throwdowns. But can he actually top Vince Carter’s iconic “Dunk of Death” over Frederick Weis at the Sydney 2000 Olympics?
