Sports media personality Colin Cowherd never runs out of hot takes which is why he’s Colin Cowherd. In one of his recent heard-turning claims. Cowherd said that the 2024 Team USA that’s bound for the Paris Olympics is so much better than the legendary and original 1992 Dream Team.
So,Canada got off to a good start, and Canada is better than any team that the 1992 Dream team faced. They’re better. The basketball is so much better now than it’s ever been. I mean, the game is incredible. Jason Tatum did not start last night. He’s better than Scottie Pippen, ” Cowherd said.
Cowhered reasoned out that the current iteration of Team USA is better mainly because it is so skilled from top to bottom, with every player capable of doing multiple things on the basketball court.
Offensively, it’s not particularly close. It’s a global sport. Everybody can shoot. Everybody can handle the ball. I mean, I’m watching Wemby (Victor Wembanyama). He’s not on our team. But what that kid can do, Chet Holmgren at 7’2 can do, it’s incredible. The 1992 Dream team, Larry Bird was shot. He retired 10 days after the Olympics. You had multiple guys on that team, multiple, who could not handle the ball and who couldn’t shoot.

Cowherd’s take shouldn’t take away anything from the greatness of the Dream Team, though. It had the greatest assembly of basketball players, with Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird on the same team. It won the gold medal and crushed the competition by an average scoring margin of 43.8 points.
Granted that the competition then was not as challenging as it is today, who’s to say that those 1992 stars wouldn’t be able to handle any given 2024 squad in an international competition?
