There’s no question at this point: Team USA are the heavy favorites to win the gold medal in the men’s basketball event of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The way they manhandled every single team they faced in Paris so far justifies their tag as one of the heavy hitters in the tournament. Their status is further solidified by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s claim that teams cannot afford to make mistakes against this roster.
However, some narratives surrounding the players have nothing to do with their on-court performances.
One good example is Joel Embiid’s tricky relationship with France during the games. Many French fans are letting Embiid feel their disappointment towards him after choosing to play for Team USA instead of Les Bleus, and the hatred baffled almost every player on the roster.
Another surprising storyline that took the fans’ attention is Kevin Durant’s relationship with Drake. The topic is far from anything the Phoenix Suns forward is doing right now, but he made it relevant with a no-nonsense reply.
Kevin Durant fires venomous message to fan after unnecessary comment about his relationship with Drake
It’s public knowledge that Durant has a good relationship with Canadian rapper Drake. It was inevitable that the Slim Reaper would also be targeted by fans since players like DeMar DeRozan have been dragged into the aftermath of the Drake-Kendrick Lamar rap beef.
One Kendrick Lamar fan took to social media to diss Durant for his connection with the One Dance hitmaker, calling not tough for his connection. Durant had a straightforward response.
“Shutup lame,” Durant fired back on Twitter/X.
This hasn’t been the first time the Phoenix Suns forward has been ruthless to detractors on social media. For him to snap back at a random fan for his hot take on his off-court activities may seem random to some, but that’s just who Durant is as a chronically online person.
Kevin Durant is putting on a show for Team USA
KD has been as efficient on the Olympic floor as his fingers on his smartphone’s keyboard.
He only sits second to Anthony Edwards on the Team USA roster in scoring at 16 PPG. He’s also making his impact felt on other aspects of the game with 2.7 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.3 SPG.
As long as Durant continues to play at such a high level, it wouldn’t be strange to expect him with another Olympic gold medal around his neck by the time he heads for home.
