Stephen Curry is the talk of the town after an explosive performance that helped Team USA score a 95-91 win against Serbia on Thursday. But people are also not forgetting the brilliant showing from LeBron James, who continues to amaze despite his age.
The four-time NBA Most Valuable Player had a profound reflection about his stellar basketball career following the win against Serbia, seemingly acknowledging his inevitable departure from the sport.
Via Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press:
“I’m 39 years old, going into my 22nd season, I don’t know how many opportunities and moments I’m going to get like this to compete for something, compete for something big and play in big games,” James said. “And tonight was a big game.”
Against Serbia, James played 32 minutes, providing 16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and a steal, while shooting 6/9 from the field, including a couple of connections from behind the arc.
The 2024 Paris Olympics is very much likely the last participation of James in the quadrennial event as a player, as he’s about to turn 40 years old. He will be 43 years old by the start of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Then again, James is a rare basketball specimen that appears to be aging like fine wine, so who knows if he could actually make it back to the Olympics again after Paris.
For now, though, his main focus is on winning his third Olympic gold, which he could get with a win on Saturday against France.
