The safe bet in the 2024 Paris Olympics is on Team USA. They are heavily favored before and during the Summer Games, with the Americans collecting two wins against zero losses, thus far. Even with their success, Team USA are not without some issues.
Sports personality Nick Wright has an idea about one of those — or them — as he targeted Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid during a recent “First Things First” episode.
“This is another opportunity for Joel Embiid to be dominant in a big spot — and he’s going 0-fer. … He’s been Team USA’s 3rd worst player, at best, and at worst, their worst player.”
It is hard to build a case for Embiid based on his performances during Team USA exhibition games and in the Olympics to date. Through two games in Paris, Embiid has scored just 11 points on 2/5 shooting with a minus-8 overall.
The good news for Team USA is that they don’t necessarily need Embiid to play well because they literally are composed of several future Basketball Hall of Famers. The United States’ frontcourt remains fine despite Embiid’s troubles, with Bam Adebayo and Anthony Davis providing excellent play on the court.
Embiid still has a chance to put together a much more acceptable performance. Perhaps he is due for one this coming Saturday with a matchup against Puerto Rico.
