Tyrese Haliburton showed his support for Caitlin Clark’s boyfriend Connor McCaffery, who recently entered his new role as an assistant coach at Butler University. McCaffery is a former basketball coordinator for the Indiana Pacers.
When McCaffery was with the Pacers, he led the player scouting operations, assisted with video operations, scouting reports, and player workouts. He will be replacing Greg Oden as Butler’s new assistant coach as Oden shifts his focus to his business ventures outside of coaching.
Haliburton shared Butler’s announcement of McCaffery’s hiring in an instagram story, captioning his post with three fire emojis to express his excitement.
Both Caitlin Clark and her boyfriend played for the University of Iowa during their college days. McCaffery spent six seasons with the Hawkeyes, scoring over 700 points in his collegiate career.
Butler head coach Thad Matta recognized McCaffery’s background, saying that he will be a valuable addition to the team’s coaching staff.
“Following a high-level playing career, Connor has had the opportunity to both contribute and learn alongside one of the best staffs in the NBA,” Coach Matta said. “Those experiences will be very valuable to our staff. He obviously comes from a basketball family that I know very well and I’m excited for the impact he is going to have on our program both quickly and in the long run.”
McCaffery’s younger brother Patrick will be joining the Bulldogs as a player in the coming 2024-25 season.
A look at Caitlin Clark and Connor McCaffery’s relationship
Indiana Fever’s star rookie Caitlin Clark and Butler University’s new assistant coach Connor McCaffery had kept their relationship mostly private despite Clark’s rapidly growing popularity. The pair’s relationship started in April 2023 when they were both basketball players at the University of Iowa.
Connor completed his collegiate career in Iowa, playing in 166 games and setting an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.59—the second best in NCAA history. Meanwhile, Caitlin finished her collegiate career averaging 31.6 points and 8.9 assists per game and became the first overall pick of the 2024 WNBA Draft.
When Caitlin Clark joined the Fever, she talked about how her being in close proximity with her boyfriend makes their relationship easier.
“It’s great, obviously it makes the transition a little bit easier,” Caitlin Clark said in an IndyStar interview. “You’ve got people that know the city, and obviously Connor being there is tremendous. I couldn’t imagine a better place to start my professional career.”
