Regardless of who you ask, it’s clear that this year’s UConn Huskies are among the best teams to ever grace the tournament. The way they dominated through the first two rounds of March Madness already has fans wondering where their starting five will end up in the draft.
The Huskies have been playing incredibly well that Mike Greenberg believes they can even compete in the NBA. However, unfavorable reactions from much of basketball Twitter meant that he had to clarify what he meant.
Mike Greenberg explains his joke about the UConn Huskies competing against NBA teams
Greenberg explained that he doesn’t believe the Huskies will be able to compete in the NBA. The long-time analyst then explains that he only had to speak up on the matter due to the vitriol he received when he commented.
“I was obviously kidding, and it became sort of a running gag through the show,” Greenberg said, pointing to him flippantly asking how UConn would fare in a best-of-seven series against the Boston Celtics.
One of Greenberg’s producers told him he figured it was a joke from knowing his sense of humor, but it wasn’t as apparent as Greenberg thought. Greenberg took responsibility for not conveying his joke properly.
“I’m more than willing to admit that I’ve said more than a million stupid things,” Greenberg said (h/t Awful Announcing). “It just bothered me yesterday because I knew I was kidding. And maybe — look, I grant, if it wasn’t obvious enough that I was kidding, that’s on me. That’s not on anybody else.”
His clarification should make things clear to every NBA fan: even he doesn’t believe the best college team has what it takes to take down any of the worst teams in the NBA.
Even MIke Greenberg knows that the level of athleticism and skill found in the NBA cannot be compared to what is going on at the collegiate level. While Dan Hurley’s men are steamrolling through the competition, they will find it hard to square up against the Washington Wizards.
Will the UConn Huskies compete against the weakest NBA team?
Some of the most diehard Huskies fans will argue that their team has the skills to compete in the NBA. Players like Tristen Newton and Cam Spencer have been solid for the team throughout the season, and Hurley has formulated a solid game plan around his players’ strengths and weaknesses.
However, it’s also important to note that NBA players are on a different level. Kyle Kuzma and Jordan Poole may belong to the worst team in the NBA, but they were still outstanding players in college. Moreover, they have more developed bodies compared to their collegiate counterparts.
While the Wizards will probably win against the Huskies, it will still be an intriguing sight to see.
