San Antonio Spurs center and star player Victor Wembanyama gave his honest opinion on the potential for him and high school basketball rising star AJ Dybantsa.
In an interview with SpursReport reporter Dusty Garza, Wembanyama was asked if he is aware of high school basketball star AJ Dybantsa expressing his interest in getting drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, and wanting to play alongside the team’s star center.
In the candid interview, Wemby admitted to not being used to players specifically rooting to play with him, but he also shed light on how uncertain team rosters are in the NBA, which makes a team-up between the two by 2026 possible, but not definite.
“No, not really,” Wemby said when asked if he is used to prospective picks wanting to be his teammate. “Because, first of all, the rules of the NBA. But, also, most players, we’re opponents. Nothing’s sure in this league about a player’s future.”
What Wemby was talking about was the nature of team membership and player match-ups in the NBA. The NBA has rules regarding free agency, player contracts, and trades. These rules mean that players can be raided off to a different team, and previous teammates can be opponents in the next season.
In the situation of Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs, and Dybantsa, a lot could happen before the 2026 NBA draft. While Dybantsa could remain the apparent first pick, the Spurs could trade off their draft pick to a different team, or Wemby himself could be traded off to a different team.
Victor Wembanyama Gets Compared to Late NBA Legend
Former Spurs forward and two-time NBA All-Star Sean Elliott recently talked about Victor Wembanyam: his skills, the way he plays, and his mentality in the game. In his statement, Elliot likened Wemby to the late Kobe Bryant and his famous “Mamba mentality.”
“If you have to ask a big man to leave the gym, that’s unheard of,” Elliott said. “I think he’s got a little bit of that Kobe mentality. Not even a little bit, but a lot. He really wants to be the best in the game. He has the hunger and the desire.”
Kobe’s famous “Mamba mentality” is often praised not only by those in basketball but by everyone in general, as it is often associated with having a great focus on one’s goal and a great drive to achieve it.
Victor Wembanyama, for the 20224-2025 season, is averaging 23.6 points per game, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.
