The high-flying Vince Carter finally made it to the Naismith Hall of Fame and gave a 30-minute speech thanking everyone who helped him achieve such status. Among the contemporaries he thanked was position rival Kobe Bryant, of whom the North Carolina Tar Heel shared a very interesting story about the five-time NBA champion.
Carter was one rare specimen who enjoyed a 22-year career in the NBA and bared that he had a hard time letting go of his basketball playing days. As fatherhood is creeping on his aging basketball body, the eight-time NBA All-Star seeked the advice of Kobe Bryant on how to let go of playing professionally.
Expecting a very competitive response from a character like Bryant, Carter was bedazzled on the advice he got.
“I was thinking typical Kobe’s going to say something, you know, over the top and you know what he said? ‘Man, this is great! Man, you are going to love it! Retirement is great—I get to see my family, we had girls, I get to coach my daughter now and see her grow’ … I was like, ‘What the hell?’,” said Carter.
After the conversation, Carter absorbed what Bryant had to say and convinced him to walk away from the NBA at peace.
“Briefly after that, I said, ‘I’m retiring’ because Kobe Bryant allowed me to see it’s ok. You can be a fierce competitor all these years but when it is time to walk away, get ready for round 2. Thank you, Kobe!”

Vince Carter reveals lost chance to sit with Kobe Bryant after helicopter crash
To end Vince Carter’s Kobe Bryant story in his Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame speech, he shared how both of them tried to reconnect after his career was over. Most of all, the eerie timing of the infamous helicopter crash during his birthday.
“I do want to add, it is tough for me so, we were supposed to have a conversation. A couple of weeks later he said ‘We’ll get on the phone, let’s talk about it. I will guide you through it.’ January 26, he passed away. Which was also my birthday,” Carter ends.
The Atlanta Hawks was the last team Vince Carter played for in the NBA. The final weeks of his illustrious basketball career were cut short when the league was suspended during the pandemic in 2020.
