Tyus Jones may be one of the casualties in free agency, as the Washington Wizards are committed to a full rebuild after using the No. 2 pick to get Alex Sarr in this year’s NBA Draft.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Washington Wizards have thought about offloading Tyus Jones via a sign-and-trade since the nine-year veteran wants to get paid this summer.
“Heading into free agency, Jones is looking for starting point guard money on the market. With Washington still in the early stages of a rebuild, there’s a growing sense the Wizards would be more open to a potential sign-and-trade, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote in his column.
“Tyus Jones is considered one of the top point guards available in free agency. The notion of a potential sign-and-trade possibility was previously suggested a week ago by rival NBA executives in a HoopsHype report and has now gained more steam,” he added.
In his first season with the Washington Wizards, Tyus Jones had the best numbers of his career, averaging 12.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game on 49/41/80 shooting splits in 66 regular-season games.
During his end-of-season interview in April, Tyus Jones expressed his desire to stay in the nation’s capital, but he might be on the move and is linked to a potential move to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Washington Wizards’ moves so far this offseason
The Washington Wizards have been fairly busy this offseason. They traded Deni Avdija in exchange for Malcolm Brogdon and draft picks while signing Richaun Holmes and Jonas Valanciunas to multi-year deals.
Washington got the No. 14 pick in this year’s draft via the Malcolm Brogdon trade, and they used it to pick Bub Carrington from Pittsburgh.
Furthermore, the Washington Wizards also declined the team option of second-year center Tristan Vukcevic, and they also agreed with Landry Shamet to move his contract guarantee date to July 13 (originally June 29).
