The West Virginia Mountaineers improved to 11-2 after an impressive win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. The Mountaineers surged to a 46-19 lead at halftime before defeating Oklahoma State by a final score of 69-50.
West Virginia Improves Conference Record After Historic Win
West Virginia begins Big 12 play 2-0 after the victory, including a win over Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time in school history. Oklahoma State falls to 8-5 and 0-2 in the Big 12, a conference that many consider to be the strongest in college basketball. The Mountaineers are now on a 7 game win streak, thanks in large part to senior Javon Small, who transferred from Oklahoma State to join the Mountaineers in the offseason.
Superstar in the Making
Small recorded his second double-double of the season in Saturdays contest against the Cowboys with 24 points on 7/16 shooting, and tied his season high in rebounds with 11 to go along with 4 assists. Smalls ability to score and rebound early in Big 12 action suggests he could be primed for all-conference honors at the end of the season. Small has scored double digits in every game this season for the Mountaineers, and will be relied upon to carry a heavy workload as duo star and head coaches son Tucker DeVries continues to recover from an unspecified injury.
Help from the Young Fella
Freshman guard Jonathan Powell aided in the Mountaineers victory by adding 17 points to tie his season high on 6-10 shooting from the field and 5-7 from 3 point range. The Freshman has seen increased minutes in recent games, tallying 32 against Kansas and 34 in Saturdays game. His season high clocks in at 36 in a victory over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats earlier in December. Center Eduardo Andre also added 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers.
Looking Ahead
The Mountaineers will seek to stay undefeated in conference games with a home matchup againt the Arizona Wildcats next, a team they defeated earlier in the season at the Bad Boys Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Wildcats are currently 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12.
