Toronto Tempo is the name of the new and upcoming WNBA team from Canada. Or at least, if the leaked information from the WNBA website is to be believed.
As revealed by X user WinsidrAryeh, a quick look at the schedules page of the WNBA website would give users options to filter the schedule of games per team. In the dropdown menu for the teams, a new name was added—Toronto Tempo.
As of writing, the Toronto Tempo name is no longer part of the list of teams for any dropdown on the website.
Over at the WNBA subreddit, fans discussed their reaction to the leak. Some find it okay, while some struggle to find how the name is relevant to Toronto’s history, culture, or anything that people associate with the city.
Despite the mixed reaction from people, it seems that the “Toronto Tempo” namesake for the extension team may be real after all, as someone close to the matter seemingly confirmed the leaked information.
Toronto Raptors reporter Chelsea Leite took to X to address the recent “WNBA news” that got leaked. While she did not say anything specific, she did say that this information was not supposed to be public this early.
“So the WNBA news going around was supposed to be announced at a later date,” Leite said in her post. “[Definitely] an error on the league’s end. This wasn’t the original plan.”
Still, fans were quick to put one and one together, since the latest WNBA “leak” that is related to Toronto is the news about the “Toronto Tempo” name.
Toronto Tempo: Leaked Name or Just a “Tempo” Placeholder?
While a lot of people shared both positive and negative opinions on the choice for the name of the Toronto WNBA team, some people believe that “Tempo” is not a real name but rather a placeholder for the real one, thus being short for “temporary.
With this in mind, some people theorized that the “leak” may just be an internal coding error that revealed a placeholder text for the field for Toronto’s team, which was internally labeled only as “tempo” for now
A Google search, as of writing, for the term “Toronto Tempo” would lead mostly to weather information for the Toronto area, particularly temperature forecasts. The Toronto WNBA team would be the first team in the league outside of the United States, and would also be the first team coming from Canada. They are expected to debut in 2026.
