Reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson continues to break records. A few days after becoming the first player in league history to score more than 1,000 points in a single season, she now has the most total rebounds in a single season.
A’ja Wilson broke the record when she grabbed a missed three-point attempt from Seattle Storm guard Skylar Diggins-Smith midway through the first period of the Las Vegas Aces’ 85-72 victory.
Before Wednesday’s game, Wilson was behind Angel Reese on the list, as the Chicago Sky forward had 446 rebounds before sitting out the rest of the season due to a wrist injury.
A’ja Wilson is the overwhelming favorite to win this year’s WNBA MVP award, which would be the third in her career. The six-time WNBA All-Star is averaging 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.8 steals, and 2.6 blocks on 51.8 percent shooting from the field in 38 regular season games.
With the 28-year-old superstar leading the way, the Las Vegas Aces finished the 2024 WNBA regular season with a 27-13 win-loss record, good for the fourth seed in the postseason. They’ll take on the Seattle Storm in the first round.
A’ja Wilson takes a dig at Angel Reese about setting the new WNBA single-season rebounding record
After learning she set the single-season rebounding record, A’ja Wilson said that doing so is the by-product of trying to lead her team to victories instead of “hunting” them a la Angel Reese, the previous record holder who has done so mostly off her misses.
“Record for what? Rebounds? That’s cool. I don’t hunt rebounds, so it’s not something that’s always on my mind,” Wilson cheekily answered. “I’m 6’4″ and I’m around the basket, I hope I can grab a couple of rebounds for my team. But when it comes to just getting them to get them, I’m not focused on that, I’m focused on getting the ball in the hoop.”
“But it’s a blessing, this league is tough. If my name can be in the record books in some sort of way, so that’s cool,” she added.
