Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson is in the midst of one of the most important seasons of his career. Based on how the Dubs have been playing all year long, it’s very much possible that they might end up not competing for a championship this season.
Thompson, however, is fighting for his future with the Warriors.
Shaq Gets Real on Klay Thompson’s Future With Golden State Warriors
Thompson is currently in the final year of his deal with Golden State. This means that he could be playing in his final season with the Warriors. That is unless the team offers him an extension this summer.
Hall of Fame big man Shaquille O’Neal has chimed in on Thompson’s current predicament. The four-time NBA champ got brutally honest about what he believes Klay has to do to secure his future with the Dubs:
“He needs to realize that Father Time is the only one to beat him,” Shaq said on a recent episode of his podcast (h/t Advait Jajodia of The Sports Rush). “Give me a player that bust Klay when Klay was Klay… Klay needs to just stop worrying about what people say and just play cause when it’s all said and done, he’s a Hall-Of-Famer, he got three or four rings, and it happens. However, he want to get another contract he better turn it up.”
Thompson is without a doubt one of the most significant players in Warriors franchise history. He was integral to all four of Golden State’s titles, and he will likely see his jersey raised to the rafters when he retires.
However, the harsh reality is that Thompson is now in the twilight years of what has been a memorable NBA career. He will be 35 next season, and there’s no denying that he’s no longer the superstar he once was.
Then again, as they always say, the last thing shooters lose is their shooting touch. Thompson still has some gas left in the tank, and based on Shaq’s advice, the five-time All-Star will just need to drown out the noise and do what he does in order to prove that he deserves an extension with the Warriors.
