The firing of Darvin Ham as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers continues to be a hot topic in the NBA realm. For ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, the Lakers were wrong to let go of Ham even though Los Angeles got ousted from the 2024 NBA Playoffs in the first round via a sweep at the hands of the Denver Nuggets.
Stephen A. Smith Thinks the Los Angeles Lakers Shouldn’t Have Fired

Although many Lakers fans had already been calling for the team to sack Ham long before the Nuggets series, Smith believes that ultimately, Los Angeles was just unlucky to face the Nuggets anew in the playoffs — the same team that struck them out of title contention in 2023.
“Absolutely not, Smith said when asked if the Lakers were right to fire Ham.
“He got screwed. It was the wrong decision. In two seasons, he’s going to the Western Conference Finals, he’s going to the playoffs twice. They were better this year than they were last year. They just ran into the reigning defending NBA champions. And last year, they ran into the best team in basketball, who ended up being the champions. That’s the only team that’s knocked off the Lakers. Is that the cause for being fired? I don’t know what to say about that.”

Darvin Ham’s Tenure With the Lakers
Ham, who had no prior head coaching experience in the NBA when the Lakers hired him to be the team’s mentor in 2022, can find solace in the fact that Los Angeles did not miss the boat to the playoffs under his watch.
In his first season with the team, the Lakers went to the Western Conference Finals where they got swept by Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets, who went on to win the NBA title. After going through the Play-in Tournament, the Lakers also made it to the 2024 NBA Playoffs, albeit lasting just a round.
Overall, Ham went 90-74 in the regular season and 9-12 in the playoffs during his time as the Lakers head coach.
