Ever since Rudy Gobert entered the NBA almost a decade ago, the French has proven how much of a defensive threat he has been through the years. But after he was voted as the NBA’s most overrated player, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ girlfriend came to his defense.
Gobert first entered the league as the Denver Nuggets’ 27th pick in the 2013 Draft, and traded to the Utah Jazz shortly after. During his rookie season, the French big man only played 45 games with averages of 2.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in 9.6 minutes per contest.
It would take some time before Gobert’s potential on the defensive end of the court became a reality. In 2018, the then-Utah Jazz star averaged 13.5 points, 10.7 boards, 1.4 assists, and 2.3 blocks per game to win his first Defensive Player of the Year award. He would go on to win the said award in 2019 and 2021.
Apart from winning the DPOY award thrice, Gobert was also named to three All-Star Games, four All-NBA teams, and six All-Defensive teams throughout his career. And after a massive trade that took him to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Gobert is back in the playoffs and doing what he does best for his team.
Julia Bonilla Defends Boyfriend Rudy Gobert After Minnesota Timberwolves Star Was Voted Most Overrated Player
Just recently, Gobert was voted as the most overrated player by his peers in the NBA. Shortly after, Julia Bonilla, Gobert’s girlfriend, came to his defense in a post shared by NBA Central on X:
Julia Bonilla defends Rudy Gobert
“My partner is the most dedicated, focused, hard-working person I have ever met. He hasn’t stolen anything from anyone and deserves all the respect for his determination and commitment to his career. It’s hard for me to stay quiet in front of so much stupidity, disrespect and nonsense. I am so proud of the person he is — fair, a great teammate, with a good heart and a strong mind,” NBA Central tweeted.
All things considered, Bonilla makes a good point for Gobert. Unlike other NBA players who have been involved in questionable activities, such as Ja Morant’s punching incident or Jontay Porter’s illegal betting on games, the Timberwolves big man has done more good than harm to others.
It remains to be seen what Gobert’s response will be about his recent award. What’s certain, though, is a lot of eyes will be on him as the Timberwolves face the Phoenix Suns in their playoff series.
