24 hours after bagging the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year title, it has been revealed that San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama has missed out on winning the Defensive Player of the Year award. This is after Minnesota Timberwolves big man Rudy Gobert was named this season’s DPOY for a record-tying fourth time in his career.

Wemby himself saw this coming a mile away. However, the 20-year-old has made it abundantly clear that he will do everything in his power to ensure that Gobert doesn’t bring home the trophy for a fifth time.

Earlier this season, Wembanyama was asked about his thoughts on Gobert potentially winning the DPOY crown again. The Spurs youngster delivered a savage take on what the future holds for both him and Gobert:

You have to note, though, that there’s a lot of mutual respect between these two big men. After all, both men hail from France, and I’m pretty sure that Gobert has reached out to Wemby multiple times to try and do whatever he can to ease the latter’s transition in the NBA.

Be that as it may, both players are also two of the most competitive studs you’ll ever face, so you can be sure that all the pleasantries are set aside whenever they battle on the court.

For what it’s worth, Wemby came in second in the final vote tally, but as it turns out, Gobert was the runaway winner:

As Wemby said, Gobert should enjoy his fourth DPOY win now. He should bask in its glory because there’s no denying that he deserves the recognition.

Time is running out for the Timberwolves center, though, because Wembanyama is set to change the course of the NBA in the not-so-distant future.
