Everything is going well for the San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama.
While their on-court struggles are clear as day, the future is bright for the budding partnership between the French rookie and the organization that drafted him first in the 2023 NBA Draft. He’s already playing so well that players have begun reaching out to him with offers to team up in the future.
However, dealing with American sports culture isn’t the only thing Wemby is dealing with. There are plenty of other things that could affect his performance on the court.
Fortunately for Spurs fans, they don’t have to worry about their star man struggling with those kinds of problems any time soon.
Victor Wembanyama pushes away ‘distractions’ to focus on the San Antonio Spurs
Wembanyama interviewed with The Ringer to talk about his recently concluded rookie season. He talked about his observations on being a highly touted NBA player who developed his game outside of the United States.
While he admitted that the cultural gap between the United States and France is something he still has to navigate, he believes that fans shouldn’t be worried about him getting distracted from things that affect contemporaries his age.
“I feel like I’m immune to the … distractions like partying, alcohol, drugs. Like, why would I ever do that? I don’t have nothing to compensate for.”

“I just feel like I’m immune to the things people try to tell me, ‘Oh, pay attention to this, oh watch out,’ all the bad things, distractions,” Wembanyama said. “Partying, alcohol, drugs, whatever. Why would I ever do that? I don’t have nothing to compensate for.”
It’s great for the San Antonio Spurs that their franchise player is approaching the game as seriously as he could. His performance in his rookie season already has him as one of the best players in the league, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks a game.
Victor Wembanyama’s commitment to becoming the best basketball player he can become will only bolster his case to become a bona fide superstar in the league. San Antonio Spurs fans hope this attitude will stay consistent throughout his career.
