The UConn Huskies are looking every bit like the reigning and defending national champions based on how they have fared so far in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Dan Hurley’s squad has been a blackhole that disintegrates any team that comes close to them, the latest being the San Diego State Aztecs, who got blown out by the Huskies Thursday night via a score of 82-52.

Just how dominant the Huskies are in the Big Dance, thus far? Let’s just say that they defeated the No. 16 Stetson Hatters in the first round by 39 points, then blew out the No. 9 Northwestern Huskies in the second round by 17 points. San Diego State was buried under a 30-point deficit by the end of its rematch in the Sweet 16 round against the Huskies.
After the win over Brian Dutcher’s Aztecs, Hurley said that the Huskies had to absolutely crush opponents as hard as they could because UConn struggles at closing out tight contests.
“We suck at winning close games,” UConn coach Dan Hurley said. “You’ve got to go with the alternative.”
Againas the Aztecs, the Huskies leaned on the likes of Cam Spencer, Tristen Newton, and Stephen Castle on offense. Spencer led the team with 18 points, while Newton and Castle chipped in 17 and 16 points, respectively.
If Hurley and the UConn Huskies are truly thirsty for something that will really give them a tough test, they might just get it on Saturday against the determined No. 3 Illinois Fighting Illini, who just took down the No., 2 Iowa State Cyclones on Thursday to advance to the Elite Eight round.
