The Boston Celtics lost their second straight game on Thursday night, this time falling to the New York Knicks, 118-109. This follows Tuesday’s blowout loss against a Milwaukee Bucks side that had to play through a devastating Giannis Antetokounmpo injury.
Given how the Celtics have struggled of late, it comes as no surprise that the pundits have been questioning their title credentials. This includes Hall of Fame big man Shaquille O’Neal.

O’Neal, who himself once dawned the Celtics uniform following his decorated tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, isn’t convinced that Boston has what it takes to go all the way this season. When asked which team he believes will likely fail to live up to the championship buzz that has surrounded them, Shaq turned his gaze on Jayson Tatum and Co.:
“Overrated? Boston,” the big man said on a recent episode of his podcast. “… I’ve seen a lot of guys that have had a great regular season, but they don’t win championships.”
To be fair, it doesn’t seem like O’Neal hasn’t lost all hope on the Celtics. However, he clearly wants to see much better play from this squad if they’re serious about ending their title drought this season.
Shaq Has Sound Advice
Being a four-time NBA champion himself, the 15-time All-Star center knows a thing or two about reaching the pinnacle of the sport. He dropped some sage knowledge about what’s needed to get to the top:
“Consistency and dominate consistency,” he said. “Got to do more. Every game. You got to go to another level.”
