It will take some time before Kamilla Cardoso can make her WNBA regular season debut for the Chicago Sky. The former South Carolina Gamecocks star suffered a shoulder injury during a WNBA preseason game on May 3 against the Minnesota Lynx

However, Cardoso’s spirits remain high, thanks in part to the advice given to her by her college head coach, Dawn Staley.

Via Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune:

Kamilla Cardoso said Dawn Staley gave her simple advice for overcoming an early injury as a rookie with the Chicago Sky: “Just be you.”

During the Lynx game, Cardoso was able to score six points and grab four rebounds to go with an assist, a steal, and two blocks in just 13 minutes of action. Cardoso is a winner, having won a national title with the Gamecocks in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Cardoso and the Gamecocks defeated the Caitlin Clark-led Iowa Hawkeyes in the national championship game, 87-75, to complete an immaculate season in which South Carolina went 38-0.

One can only imagine how excited she is about playing again and helping the Sky in the coming 2024 WNBA campaign.

The Sky are set to kick off their 2024 season on May 15 on the road against the Dallas Wings. While she’s sidelined, Chicago might have to ask more from another one of its rookies in former LSU Tigers star Angel Reese. Cardoso and Reese were picked third and seventh overall, respectively, by the Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
