There have been plenty of phenomenal basketball players who have come and gone through the college game. However, one can argue that none of them have been as impactful as Iowa Hawkeyes guard Caitlin Clark.
The 6’0″ phenom who lives only two hours away from the university has been a phenomenal player who broke multiple records through her collegiate basketball journey. She’s been so good on the hardwood that people are already naming her as the female Stephen Curry.
However, one analyst believes there’s one thing stopping the senior from claiming the throne of being the greatest college hooper of all time.
Andraya Carter: Iowa Hawkeyes’ Caitlin Clark must win the national title to be crowned college basketball GOAT
ESPN analyst Andraya Carter recognizes how great Clark has been throughout her four years in Iowa City. She believes that no one will be able to question her greatness if she manages to win the national championship for the Hawkeyes.
Per The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglou:
“People are going to give me a hard time for this, and that’s fine, but if Caitlin Clark wins a national championship this season, she’s the GOAT of college basketball. The greatest of all-time,” Carter said. “There are multiple reasons why. The first one are the records she’s broken on the men’s and women’s side. Caitlin Clark will be the first player ever to lead the country in not just scoring.
“There are things she has done that no player on the men’s or women’s side has done. To me, I know players have won multiple national championships. Breanna Stewart won four [championships]. Maya Moore was my favorite player. I had newspaper clippings of her. Every time I see her I still get butterflies because I’m that excited. But if Caitlin Clark wins one, she’s the GOAT.”
She makes a compelling argument. While Clark has been great individually, a national title is the only thing lacking from her already impressive basketball CV.
Will Clark lead the Hawkeyes to glory in 2024?
It may be dumb to argue if Caitlin Clark can lead the Hawkeyes to a deep playoff run, but it’s important to remember that basketball is a team game. While she’s an incredible basketball player, nine other players are with her on the court.
However, it’s hard to deny that she can single-handedly carry her team to the national title. In her senior year, she’s averaging 31.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists on 46%/38%/86% shooting splits. She’s essentially a grown woman playing with girls.
If she can bring the national title to Iowa, few can argue against her case as the greatest college cager to ever lace them up.
