The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is dying, with superstars not even interested in joining the annual All-Star event. However, New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson could change that narrative if he joins the competition.
Williamson, for his part, is open to participating in the dunk contest. But, he has a condition.
New Orleans Pelicans’ Zion Williamson Will Join Dunk Contest, But There’s 1 Condition

After the Pelicans’ Tuesday win over the Toronto Raptors, Williamson was asked about potentially joining the dunk contest. The event could really use some star power after its decline in recent years.
Ever since the 2016 dunk showdown between Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon, the subsequent iterations have failed to live up to the same standard. Granted that it might be difficult to surpass or even equal it, but the fact of the matter is none has even come close.
The lack of superstars joining the competition doesn’t help. Jaylen Brown did take on the challenge this 2024, but he largely disappointed.
Williamson, one of the most explosive dunkers in the NBA today, was then implored on possibly bringing his rim-rattling talents to the All-Star festivity. The Pelicans forward then promised to do it, but only if he makes the All-Star Game as well.

“I gotta do my part and make the All-Star game. If I’m in the All-Star game, I’ll do the dunk contest,” Williamson shared, via Pelicans Film Room.
Considering that Williamson is already a two-time All-Star at just 23 years old, there’s a good chance that he’ll make it in the years to come. And after that promise of joining the dunk contest, expect the NBA diehards to really make a strong push in voting for him.
NBA Fans React to Zion Williamson’s Promise

Sure enough, Zion Williamson’s statement sent fans into a frenzy. The New Orleans Pelicans star definitely has the reputation and ability to make the dunk contest relevant again, so the excitement is high.
With that said, many couldn’t contain their delight. Others are also already promoting Williamson to be an All-Star next season so he can be part of the Slam Dunk Contest as well.
“Would single handedly bring the dunk contest back to greatness,” a fan commented.
Another commenter said, “Adam Silver will make sure he’s an All-star come Hell or high water next year.” A third X user had similar sentiments, saying: “Watch Zion get like 30 million all star votes next year.”
A supporter also pitched the idea of having Zion and fellow 2019 draft classmate Ja Morant battle it out in the competition, saying: “Whew Zion and Ja in the dunk contest is what All Star weekend needs.”
Of course it remains to be seen if Williamson will walk the talk, but sure enough, everyone will remember that promise he made.
