A familiar face is coming back to Columbus, as Meechie Johnson has decided to take his talents back to the Ohio State Buckeyes after two seasons with the South Carolina Gamecocks (h/t BuckNuts).
Ohio State has its first transfer portal addition of the offseason, and it’s a familiar name to Buckeye fans and those who follow basketball in Ohio. Guard Meechie Johnson is set to return to the Scarlet and Gray. Johnson began his collegiate career at Ohio State before transferring to South Carolina where he played the last two seasons.
Meechie Johnson Reunites With Ohio State Buckeyes
Johnson made his intention to test the waters of the transfer portal known just after the Gamecocks were eliminated from the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Johnson and the No. 6 Gamecocks were bounced out of the Big Dance after an 87-73 upset loss to the No. 11 Oregon Ducks. Johnson scored 24 points in that game, but his performance was not enough to overcome the Ducks, who leaned on the 40-point outburst of Jermaine Couisnard.
Johnson played his first two years in college with the Buckeyes, during which he averaged just 3.2 points in 13.0 minutes per game. He comes back looking like a much better version of himself after putting up 13.4 points per game on 31.1 minutes per outing in two seasons with South Carolina. This season, he put up 14.1 points per game with the Gamecocks.
