NBA fans today are familiar with Reggie Miller as one of the voices that cover our favorite NBA teams during the regular season and the playoffs. Younger fans won’t even be familiar with the fact that Miller used to be one of the most premier sharpshooters in the league during the 90s.
Miller has been used to getting jeers and rough messages from opposing fans whenever he’s on the floor, so him getting rough opinions from fans about his coverage is familiar ground. He even takes it as a point of pride that fans think he’s being favorable towards another team when he’s covering games.
Reggie Miller thinks it’s a good thing when fans call him biased during broadcasts
Miller is among the broadcast crew who covered one of the games between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, where fans believed that he was leaning towards one team or the other.
While some fans may think that he’s showing favor towards one team, the Hall of Fame shooting guard assured fans that he’s doing things as fairly as possible.
“The best compliments I have are on social media when I hear fans saying, ‘You’re such a homer for the Lakers,’ and then the very next comment is, ‘Why are you all on the bandwagon of the Nuggets?’ I’ve done my job,” Miller said.
“That’s exactly what I want to hear. I want the criticism coming from both sides, which is 50-50 after every game. That means it was fair and balanced. The best compliments I ever get is, ‘Oh my God. Why are you all over LeBron?’ Or, ‘Do you live in Denver? Are you a Nuggets fan?’ That is the best! Those are the best. Thank you. That means I’m doing my job.”
Being objective can get tough for sports broadcasters. After all, the person delivering the commentary has their own international thoughts about a team or player. However, being able to give both teams their flowers and call them out for terrible plays is the best way a commentator can be objective for everyone watching.
And in Reggie Miller’s book, he’s doing just fine.
